The film follows her journey to Italy to record traditional music and bring it back to the choir to keep the music alive. Some of the choir members recall their experiences as post-war immigrants in Western Australia.

A joyful musical experience involving real-life characters, full of light and shade, laughter and tears as it captures the larger than life characters in the Fremantle Italian Women’s chorus.

The storyline in the ﬁlm version is fairly similar to the book but it will irk some that a white actor has been cast as the teacher and in the book he is a black man. However Kevin Spacey in this role delivers an excellent portrayal of the physically scarred teacher with much insecurity. Helen Hunt as a single Mum and Osment, as Trevor, both put in strong performances. Although a little melodramatic, this is a moving tale, inspired by the book, of a young boys vision to change the world. No doubt this ﬁlm will generate an interesting discussion.

Did Hollywood make a success of this adaptation? Is it just too senimental or does it restore your faith in human kindness.

In the ﬁlm the events take place in France which is signiﬁcantly different to the book which is set in the US. Coben was so impressed with the French Director’s passion for the story, and his vision and his understanding that the novel was a love story ﬁrst, and a thriller second, he bypassed the Hollywood producers.
