ALL ABOUT OLIVE

Made in 2005 55min Rated PG Dir: Mike Rubbo

A documentary about Olive who at the age of 105, leaves a nursing home to visit her hometown. Olive is lively, sharp-witted and spirited as she challenges the stereotype of elderly people as frail, absent minded and uninteresting!

Did Olive inspire you and change your outlook on ageing?

I loved this film. Funny, sad, engaging, moving, inspiring. Olive was and is a truly exceptional, ordinary woman - positive, feisty, courageous, warm, up for anything and certainly with it! It was a marvellous idea to take her back to the town of much of her earlier life and to honour that life through re-enactments, and meetings. I loved the way Olive sometimes became a film director within the film! What a woman! One of the most touching scenes was where Olive's much loved older sister, Emma I think, who had died at 19 appeared in spirit as it were and spoke with Olive. The actress must have been brilliant because for Olive it seemed to be completely real. It became an opportunity for Olive and Emma to finally say their goodbyes and it felt like a deep healing for Olive. I wonder if the film director realised how significant and powerful this was going to be.
