"The Lives of Others" is at once a political thriller and a human drama about the horrifying, sometimes unintentionally funny, system of observation in the former East Germany. In the early 1980s, the successful dramatist Georg Dreyman and his long-time companion Christa-Maria Sieland, a popular actress, are big intellectual stars in the socialist state, although they secretly don't always think loyal to the party line. One day, the Minister of Culture becomes interested in Christa, so the secret service agent Wiesler is instructed by him to observe and sound out the couple. Wiesler sets up his surveillance headquarters in their attic, just above the apartment and soon their life fascinates him more and more. This film convincingly demonstrates that when done right, moral and political quandaries can be the most intensely dramatic dilemmas of all.

“Twisting perspectives on lives, actions and consequences, this magnificent film satisfies on every level” Urban Cinefiles
